5 Things your can learn from Yngwie Malmsteen to accelerate your playing
Yngwie isn't easy to master. I've been trying to figure out his playing for decades. But this week (09/01/2015) I've finally figured a few things out. And what song of his did I finally do that on, you guessed it. Blackstar.
1)Start with Blackstar, it isn't his easiest song by far, but will give you a very good frame work to start and work with. Some of his signature Paganini esqe Licks are in there. And they will get you started. Yngwie does a lot of sliding after his long runs to give them a little different life and not just focus on the long ascending licks. ITs a great song to start with.
2)Fire is another great song off of Trilogy to study. The solo break is literally seperate from the rest of the songs, and can be taken seperateley and applied to many solos. Two of his Paganinni
style licks are in this solo as well.
3)Study other insturments, especially in the classical style. Yngwie studied the violin and studied Paganini intensley. By the time he was twenty Yngwie was ahead of his time. One of the ways of constructing Heavy metal style licks is studying classical music. Which is something Yngwie did often.
4) Watch this video and learn this lick!
5. Practic your scales and help your fingers in their articulation. Its improtant when playing these incredibley fast licks to nail the lick and then slide into a (bend,another riff, a chord) or anything that accentuates the line your just played.
